Corbel were extremely proud last week to be a supporter of Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day is celebrated by over 100 countries globally in February each year to promote the safe, positive and responsible use of digital technology. Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre the celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping create a better internet.

Here at Corbel we spoke to our lovely technicians to give us some helpful tips to raise awareness of safe and responsible internet and technology usage. By always following some simple guidelines when involved with technology you are contributing to keeping yourself and the online community safer.

Take a look at 5 very simple and straightforward ways you as an individual, or as an organisation can work towards keeping safe online…

  • PADLOCK

Always check a page is secure whenever you add any personal details. You can do this by checking the little padlock in the corner of your screen. This is SSL (Secure Socket Layer) that certifies the page is safe.

  • UPDATES

Always download Software updates. They are there to protect you from threats and need to be done regularly to keep you safe.

  • AVOID PUBLIC WIFI

Especially when shopping or checking your bank account online- you don’t want anyone snooping on your browsing.

  • ANTI VIRUS

Always use anti-virus software- you shouldn’t even notice it doing its thing but its there to protect you from some very nasty malware.

  • PASSWORD

Always use a strong password online make it out of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols.

We were proud to be one of the 2,100 organisations across the UK getting involved in the national conversation on twitter about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. However whilst best practice and education helps strengthen the cause significantly it cannot be relied upon alone with business.

We strongly recommend organisations adopt a layered approach to their cyber security. This involves combining several technologies to help protect systems, employees, customers and all suppliers from threats. Whilst this can appear a daunting task in a field you may know little about Corbel can support you by undertaking a Cyber Security audit. This will enable you to recognise any strengths within your basic cyber hygiene and also provide guidance on how you can improve any weaknesses.

If you need any further information about Cyber Security or would like to arrange an audit then please contact one of our friendly team on  01473 241515 or visit www.corbel.co.uk/cyber-essentials/
