It’s so important to us to develop the next generation of talent in our county, continuing the trend for the East of England to successfully be at forefront of the vibrant tech industry in the UK.
We are committed to recruiting highly motivated young people from our local area and currently have 3 apprentices at Team Corbel- Samuel, Cameron and Rhys.
To celebrate National Apprentice week 2022 we put them under the spotlight to explain a little more about being an apprentice in their own words!
Cameron joined us in April 2021, his day to day role includes working on the Level 1 helpdesk helping our customers with any issues they have with their PC’s, Laptops and Cloud applications such as 365. He has recently got involved as part of a project team on-boarding his first new customer to Corbel. In his previous life he worked within retail and excels at customer service!
Here, in his own words he tells us his thoughts on his apprenticeship so far:
1. What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
The people and support that has been given is amazing, I receive support and guidance in various ways, I get to use my skills in relevant, real-world experiences, in learning something new every day with the environment I’m involved in and I’m able to develop my skills to make me a better engineer and an essential part of my team.
2. What advice would you give to others about embarking on an Apprenticeship
Learning a new skill or developing a skill you already have may be daunting, my advice is to ask for help when you need it, don’t feel there’s ever a silly question to ask, your colleagues won’t expect you to know everything straight away, even with prior experience. Another great piece of advice is don’t be scared of making mistakes, they strengthen your skills, and you learn for next time!
3. What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt from your time at Corbel?
Developing customer relations is an important lesson, I’ve learnt how valuable work relations are in day-to-day work, I’ve also learnt to trust in the power of failure, every failure gives you a chance to grow both personally and professionally, there’s no better way to know what works than knowing what doesn’t.
Rhys joined us in October 2020, his day to day role is working on the Corbel helpdesk as well as getting actively involved alongside our L3 team on customer projects. Rhys is coming towards the end of his apprenticeship and is looking forward to joining the Corbel Team on a full time contract later in the year – watch this space!
Here, in his own words he tells us his thoughts on his apprenticeship so far:
1. What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
The ability to be hands on with the hardware and software while also being able to learn at a faster pace than a typical college course. Apprenticeships also allow you to be exposed to a wider range of software and hardware and gain a better understanding on how they work.
2. What advice would you give to others about embarking on an Apprenticeship
I would recommend looking into who is providing the apprenticeship, to find both a company and training provider that aligns with your aspirations and will give you all the support you need.
3. What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt from your time at Corbel?
My biggest lesson has been to learn how to work under pressure to make sure deadlines are met, and also, being able to not just work as part of a team but to also be able to lead one as well.
Samuel joined us in October 2021. He works within the Sales Team and is often the first point of contact for our customers when they call in. Samuel’s day to day role is logging tickets, preparing quotes, and more recently getting involved with the cyber simulation campaigns that we run. Samuel is a friendly upbeat personality and is a little ray of sunshine.
Here, in his own words he tells us his thoughts on his apprenticeship so far:
1. What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
The team and culture at Corbel! Being able to speak to people who are experts in their field who are happy to help you understand their expertise all the way through from a basic level to a much deeper knowledge – everyone is happy to give you time. Really helps in understanding the business as a whole and how every sector works together to produce a great result.
2. What advice would you give to others about embarking on an Apprenticeship
Be ready to be busy! – Be active and take control of organising your apprenticeship work alongside all the new skills you will be learning in your role.
3. What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt from your time at Corbel?
Everything – from being able to answer calls in a professional manner to understanding how hybrid back-up works and the huge benefits they offer to our clients!
