On Saturday the 11th of June, IT support experts Corbel took part in the return of the annual Dragon Boat Race at the Ipswich Waterfront. Taking part in a series of races, 22 teams made up of local businesses and organisations came together to take part in the China originated rowing event. With coordination being essential in the sport, it was the synchronisation and team effort of the 11 team members which allowed Corbel to improve its start time from 1:03:37 to an impressive 00:47:86 by the end!
Whilst Corbel were excited to be a part of the races, more importantly the team were keen to be a part of working with the charity Fresh Start new beginnings. A total of £28,000 was raised for the local charity who work closely with young people in Suffolk and Norfolk who have suffered childhood abuse. They provide the victims of sexual abuse/exploitation access help and guidance, to benefit their recovery. It was an insightful day for the team and interesting to see just how much these donations matter and help reshape the futures of the young people affected.
It was ultimately the sunny skies and competitive buzz in the air provided a brilliant atmosphere to the day, with the energy of the crowd providing excitement and motivation for the team to keep on rowing. For many at Corbel, it was a new experience that also provided an opportunity for team building. The Waterfront saw an excellent turnout and it was great to see families and friends come together to support the local event and raise the profile of Fresh Start new beginnings. If you would like to find out more about the charity itself or to make a donation take a look at their website Treatment Service for Child Sexual Abuse | Fresh Start new beginnings (fsnb.org.uk)
“Was a great day out, weather was beautiful, really enjoyed the races” said Adam Harris, Technical Support Team Leader. Whilst Cameron Saunders, Apprentice Technical Support Engineer added “feels good to be a part of an event that supports a local charity, a shame we didn’t manage to get to the final but with the experience from this year, hopefully we’ll get in the winning race next year.” Corbel has already registered for next year’s event, so watch this space!
Corbel would also like to thank the sponsor for this year’s event, Ipswich Buses, alongside Fresh Start new beginnings and all the volunteers involved. Managing Director, Karen Rogers found the event to be “A great team building exercise and a lot of fun” where “Most importantly an amazing 28K raised for Fresh Start new beginnings” It was a fantastic day out, where Corbel were able to help contribute to making a difference to those who need it most.
